What Is Manglik Dosha?
Manglik Dosha — also called Kuja Dosha or Mangal Dosh — is the classical Vedic astrology condition where natal Mars occupies one of six specific houses (1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 12th) counted from the Ascendant, the Moon, or Venus. The earliest references are in Phaladeepika Ch. 9 (Mantreshwara, 15th c.) and Hora Sara Ch. 21 (Prithuyasas).
In classical interpretation, Mars in these houses brings sharpness, friction, and unpredictable intensity to the life areas those houses govern — and the 7th, 8th, and 12th houses specifically touch marriage / partner / shared resources / bedroom dynamics. So the dosha is read primarily as a marriage-compatibility factor.
Honest framing
Manglik is not a curse. Modern Indian sociological research (Pew Research 2021, IndiaSpend 2023) shows the divorce-rate difference between Manglik and non-Manglik couples is statistically negligible. The dosha has 7 classical cancellation rules (Manglik Bhanga) that apply in many real cases. Most contemporary Jyotish teachers treat it as one factor among many in compatibility analysis — never a deal-breaker.
The 7 Classical Cancellations (Manglik Bhanga)
- Both partners are Manglik — mutual cancellation, the most common cancellation.
- Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) — Mars is dignified, dosha cancels.
- Mars is in exaltation (Capricorn 0-28°) — strong Mars produces protection, not friction.
- Mars is aspected by Jupiter or Venus — benefic moderation softens the dosha.
- Mars is combust (within 17° of the Sun) — burned-out Mars cannot project the dosha.
- The partner’s 7th lord is strong (in own / exaltation / kendra) — strong marriage karaka overrides.
- Mars is in 2nd / 4th / 12th from Moon but the Moon is itself well-placed — lunar strength carries the dosha.
Manglik FAQ
Why do you check from Moon and not from Lagna?
The full classical check uses all three reference points: Lagna (Ascendant), Chandra Lagna (Moon), and Sukra (Venus). A person is Manglik if Mars hits 1/2/4/7/8/12 from any of these three. Lagna and Venus-based reckoning require exact birth time + birth location, which the web calculator does not collect. The CelestKin app uses all three with full Manglik Bhanga analysis.
What is Anshik (partial) Manglik?
Anshik Manglik refers to the milder forms — Mars in 2nd, 4th, or 12th — where the dosha is considered weaker than the “full” Manglik positions of 1st, 7th, or 8th. Practitioners sometimes ignore Anshik Manglik in compatibility matching unless other chart factors reinforce it.
Should two Manglik people marry each other?
Classical Jyotish says yes — the mutual-Manglik cancellation is the most-cited Manglik Bhanga rule. The reasoning: equal Mars intensity produces stable resonance rather than friction. Modern reading: don’t make a partnership decision based on this alone. Look at the whole chart compatibility, real-life compatibility, and the values you both bring.
