Why Your Moon Sign Matters
While Western astrology emphasizes the Sun sign, Vedic astrology considers the Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) the most important placement. The Moon represents your mind (Manas), emotional patterns, and how you process the world. It determines your Dasha periods, compatibility matching (Kundli Milan), and daily predictions.
The 27 Nakshatras
Nakshatras are 27 lunar mansions that divide the zodiac into finer segments of 13°20' each. Your birth Nakshatra determines your Vimshottari Dasha starting period, compatibility factors, and deeper personality traits beyond the Moon sign.

Vedic Moon Sign FAQ
Why is the Moon sign more important than the Sun sign in Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology treats the Moon as the ruler of the mind and the emotional life. Because Jyotish emphasizes how a person experiences life from the inside, the Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) is the default sign people identify with and the reference point for most timing systems, including Vimshottari Dasha.
What is a Nakshatra?
A Nakshatra is one of 27 divisions of the zodiac, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes. The Moon spends roughly one day in each Nakshatra. Your birth Nakshatra describes the finer texture of your Moon placement — your natural rhythm, your characteristic way of processing experience, and the starting point of your Dasha sequence.
Can my Vedic Moon sign differ from my Western Moon sign?
Yes. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac and Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. The two differ by roughly 24 degrees at present, so people born near the end of a Western Moon sign often have a different Vedic Moon sign. The calculator shows the sidereal value, which is the one Jyotish texts refer to.
Do I need my birth time to calculate my Vedic Moon sign?
For most days the Moon stays in one Rashi long enough that a rough time is enough. On days when the Moon crosses signs (roughly every two and a quarter days), the exact birth time determines which Rashi you land in. For Nakshatra, the boundaries are finer — roughly one per day — so an exact time is helpful for people born near a Nakshatra change.
