What Is a Nakshatra?
In Vedic astrology, the zodiac is divided not only into 12 signs (Rashis) but also into 27 lunar mansions called Nakshatras — each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the sidereal zodiac. The Moon completes one full transit of the zodiac in about 27 days, so it spends roughly one day in each Nakshatra. The Nakshatra the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth is your birth star, and it carries finer texture than your Rashi alone.
Why It Matters More Than Your Sun Sign
Three Jyotish systems pivot on your Nakshatra: (1) Vimshottari Dasha — the 120-year karmic timeline that maps which planet rules each period of your life, started by your Nakshatra Lord. (2) Ashtakuta compatibility — the 36-point Kundli Milan score uses Gana, Yoni, Varna, and Nadi (all Nakshatra-derived) for 18 of those 36 points. (3) Navamsha (D-9) — your Pada within the Nakshatra places you in one of 12 Navamsha signs, considered the truest indicator of marriage and partnership.
The 9 Vimshottari Dasha Lords (in order)
Ketu (7y) → Venus (20y) → Sun (6y) → Moon (10y) → Mars (7y) → Rahu (18y) → Jupiter (16y) → Saturn (19y) → Mercury (17y). Total 120 years. Each Nakshatra is ruled by one of these planets — your Nakshatra Lord is the starting Mahadasha of your sequence.
Nakshatra FAQ
Do I need my birth time?
For most days the Moon stays in one Nakshatra long enough that the date alone is sufficient. Birth time matters when you are born within a few hours of a Nakshatra boundary, or when you want precise Pada accuracy (each Pada spans 3°20', which the Moon crosses in roughly 6 hours). CelestKin’s in-app version uses exact birth time + location with Swiss Ephemeris.
What if my partner and I share a Nadi?
Same-Nadi (Nadi Dosha) is the strongest classical objection in Kundli Milan. Modern Jyotish practice considers it cancellable in several configurations — if both partners share the same Rashi, if Mars is well-placed in both charts, or if the Moon Nakshatras share a Rashi (Eka Rashi Bheda). It is one factor, not a deal-breaker.
Is this the same as Chinese zodiac or Western sun sign?
No. Nakshatra is a Vedic / Indian system based on the Moon’s sidereal position. Chinese zodiac is animal-year-based. Western Sun-sign is the Sun’s tropical position. These three systems address different aspects of identity — Nakshatra is closest to the Western Moon sign, but with much finer resolution.
